The NFL Has an Age Problem

Related Topics: National Football League

If you think the NFL product has been lacking in recent years, you are not alone. Just consider the age of the players. Kevin Clark of The Ringer has an interesting piece on the concern of more young players entering the league, fewer older players making rosters, and what effect that can have on the fundamentals of football. Our snap-weighted age metric is mentioned as the average age of rosters has gradually decreased from 27.2 in 2006 to a record-low 26.6 in 2015. There is also an interesting story of Baltimore coach John Harbaugh approaching DeMaurice Smith, the head of the NFLPA, at Tray Walker's funeral in March to express his dismay with the NFL's current rules for offseason contact between coaches and players.
