Fred Smoot drops a Commanders draft take so wild it might actually work

The expectation is that when the Washington Commanders make their selection with the No. 7 overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, it will likely be a defensive player.

Safety Caleb Downs, together with edge rushers Rueben Bain Jr. and David Bailey, have been linked as ideal targets for Washington, given the team's glaring needs at their positions. But it's not a sure thing that they'll be at the top of general manager Adam Peters' list, or that they'll even be available.

The Commanders could also use some help on the offensive end, particularly with wide receiver depth and at tight end.
